Experiencing Tibetan Culture in Sichun

Serving the Community

28.07.2007 ¡V 12.08.2007

In this 2-week project, 18 youngsters (16 from Hong Kong and 2 from Chengdu, China ) visited 3 remote villages: Dangpi, Xiba & Gomei in Dege County, Sichuan Province to study the feasibility of conducting worthwhile and sustainable projects in these villages in 2009 and 2010. Due to the remoteness of the 3 villages, the project is challenging and tough to the participants: bumpy roads, high altitude, no electricity and tap water and unpredictable weather. Projects conducted include the following:

  • Community Works:
    • Donation in-kind including books, stationeries, radios, school uniforms and games.
    • School maintenance such as broken windows, broken tables and chairs, beds, etc.
    • Feasibility study of installing solar and wind energy.
    • Feasibility study of building water pipes from water supply up in the hill to school to provide clean water to school children.
    • School building assessment.

  • Environmental & Conservation Works:
    • Identify suitable location for burying rubbish which cannot be recycled.
    • Environmental protection lectures such as rubbish classification to school children.

  • Adventure
    • Hike and horse back ride were taken to visit the villagers living in nomadic highland.
